Overview
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga Mountains, Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's most iconic destination and for good reason. Covering around 160 square kilometres of dense rainforest, the park spans five of the eight Virunga volcanoes (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo) and borders both Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and DR Congo's Virunga National Park. This is the legendary home of the mountain gorilla, and the place where renowned primatologist Dian Fossey based her pioneering conservation work.
A trek into Volcanoes National Park is more than a wildlife encounter – it's a journey through misty bamboo forests and volcanic slopes, culminating in a face-to-face meeting with a gorilla family in their natural habitat. The park is also home to the playful golden monkey, found only in this region of Africa.
