Tucked along Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park is the country's only true savannah park – and one of its greatest conservation success stories. Spanning roughly 1,122 square kilometres of rolling grasslands, acacia woodland, and papyrus-lined wetlands, Akagera is home to the “Big Five”: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the recently reintroduced black rhino. Its lakes and swamps, fed by the Kagera River, form the largest protected wetland system in East-Central Africa, supporting hippos, crocodiles, and an extraordinary variety of birdlife.
A Furaha-guided game drive through Akagera offers something for every traveler: early-morning safaris when the savannah is at its most active, boat cruises across Lake Ihema for close encounters with hippos and crocodiles, and golden-hour drives when the light over the lakes is nothing short of magical.
