Walk Among the Treetops of Rwanda's Ancient Rainforest
Overview
In the southwest of Rwanda lies Nyungwe National Park, the largest remaining tract of montane rainforest in the country and one of the oldest forests in Africa. Managed in partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks under a 20-year agreement signed in 2020, Nyungwe is a living laboratory of biodiversity – home to chimpanzees, twelve other primate species, and hundreds of bird and butterfly species found nowhere else on earth.
The park's star attraction is its famous Canopy Walkway, suspended 70 metres above the forest floor, offering a bird's-eye view across an endless sea of green. Beyond the walkway, Nyungwe rewards visitors with chimpanzee tracking at dawn, troops of Ruwenzori colobus monkeys moving through the canopy, and waterfall hikes through forest trails that feel untouched by time.
